Most of us have had the unfortunate experience of having a headache or migraine in the course of our lifetime. Though it has become easy to pop a pill to rid oneself of the pain, why not consider an alternative: Preventing head pain in the first place.
Researchers have discovered one of the main causes for headaches is the simple lack of hydration. As the saying goes, if you are thirsty- you are already dehydrated. Strive to get 6-8 eight ounce glasses of water per day. Avoid diuretics such as caffeine.
Trust your body to tell you when something is amiss. Many people have food sensitivities to onions, MSG or sulfites that can trigger the onset of a headache or migraine. Keep track of your headaches in a journal, noting what you ate, drank, and any other pertinent information. Compare notes each time to alleviate the culprit.
Some women experience headaches or migraines during menses as their estrogen levels drop substantially. If your headaches are related to hormonal fluctuations, add hormone balancing foods to your diet. Some sources include phytoestrogens such as dark leafy greens, dark berries and tomatoes. Cut out cheese and sugar from the diet when possible.
Another common culprit of headaches is the fluctuations caused by caffeine. If you cannot give up caffeine altogether, consider switching to decaf or herbal caffeine free teas during the day. Minimize soda intake and energy boosting drinks that create sugar and caffeine fluctuations, or the common crash that happens shortly after the body begins processing.
Alleviate headaches by combating stress and fatigue. Practice meditation or deep breathing exercises to counteract any stress. Get plenty of rest, a minimum of seven hours, and each night to allow the body to rest and recover properly.
